They deliver coordinated views to the government and authorities on matters relating to members and the tomato industry, as well as encouraging cooperation in all matters relating to the welfare of the tomato industry, solving problems and establishment of the necessary laws and regulations.
The TPO’s objective is to establish and maintain, through collective action, appropriate facilities and services for the members of the organisation and, for this purpose, to organize the tomato industry and to create the necessary service programs. In addition, the TPO is committed to cultivating and promoting unity and a spirit of cooperation amongst tomato producers.
The TPO’s focus also lies in the systematic development of the tomato industry, which includes preservation of resources (land and water), the maintenance and improvement of soil fertility, production, and marketing methods.

TOMATO PRODUCTION EMPLOYS 25k – 28K PEOPLE ANNUALLY
Tomato production in South Africa employs between 25 000 and 28 000 people a year, with increased numbers during the summer months when production volumes are higher. Between 83% and 87% of the annual crop is sold through the national and regional fresh produce markets, with a limited quantity delivered directly to supermarket chains. A small percentage of South African tomatoes are bought by cross border traders who sell produce in Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Botswana and Namibia.
South Africa is regarded as a leader in the use of best practices for tomato production. The industry is not, however, without its challenges. High input costs, fluctuating market prices, a shortage of good quality irrigation water, unreliable electricity supply, labour issues, and poor infrastructure top the list of challenges that need to be addressed.
