The Tomato Producers Organisation co-funds targeted and industry specific research in collaboration with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) through the Post-harvest Innovation Programme (PHI) (see postharvestinnovation.org.za). The PHI is directed at developing innovative technology in the postharvest leg of the fresh fruit value chain, to develop and maintain the global competitiveness of the South African fresh fruit industry.

Since 2015 the TPO contributed to four projects conducted at two South African Universities. These projects included numerous bursaries and the development of novel technology. Research output in the form of presentations and reports are available to TPO members, while the peer-reviewed scientific articles and theses emanating from the work is available to all.
